Vice President of Ramakrishna Math and Mission Swami Shivamayanandaji died Friday evening at a city hospital from COVID-19, RKM said in a statement.

The senior monk, 86, was admitted to RKM Seva Pratisthan on May 22 with mild respiratory distress. He tested positive for COVID-19 that day and had been on mechanical ventilation since June 10 after being on noninvasive ventilation since May 28.

He breathed his last at 9:05 p.m.

Born in Bihar on December 20, 1934, Swamiji was a disciple of Swami Vishuddhanandaji Maharaj, who joined the order of Belur Math in 1959 and received “Sanyas Diksha” from Swami Vireshwaranandaji Maharaj in 1969.

After serving the order in various Seva Pratisthan Centers in various capacities, he started his spiritual ministry at RKM in 2016 by giving “diksha” to devotees.

In 2017, he was elected vice-president of the twin organizations, a position he held until the end, as well as the position of director of Cossipore Math.

The seer, whose name was Ranen Mukherjee before “sanyas”, had been suffering from hypertension, bronchial asthma and kidney disease for some years.

Extending his condolences on his death, Governor of West Bengal, Jagdeep Dhankhar said, “I extend my deepest condolences on the passing of Revered Swami Shivamayanandaji Maharaj, Vice President Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission at Seva Pratisthan Kolkata. “He reached mahasamadhi today (June 11, 2021) at 9:05 p.m. due to severe Covid pneumonia,” tweeted Mr Dhankhar, a regular visitor to RKM centers.
