Retirement has hardly taken away the zeal with which S Sampath, 76, went about his teaching. He is now up to his neck in voluntary service. Some know him as “legal” Sampath, thanks to the law degree he earned during his service. He started practicing law after his retirement and today most residents of Annai Indira Nagar in Velachery approach him for legal advice. “Whether it’s writing a letter of engagement, checking documents, and offering legal help, I’m happy to help others,” says the middle-of-the-road math teacher. As president of the Annai Indira Nagar Residents Welfare Association, Sampath is at the forefront of issues concerning the neighborhood. Recently, along with other residents, he petitioned the Deputy Commissioner of Police to find solutions to the issues surrounding the upper deck on Taramani Link Road. “Even when I was working at the school, I was concerned about the problems faced by the residents of the Bharati Dasan settlement in KK Nagar where we were residing then,” he says.
