New Delhi: Ramakrishna Mission, Delhi organized a youth convention attended by over 220 students from various top institutions in the country and abroad including IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIM Calcutta, Jawahar Lal Nehru University, Oxford University, etc. Swami Shantatmananda, Secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission, Delhi, in his inaugural address, stressed the need to spread the ideas of Swami Vivekananda to all parts of the country, from metropolitan cities to remote villages, in order to sensitize young people to the infinite potential that is there. In this direction, Swami ji is working through the Awakened Citizen program which takes place in 5800 schools across India to transmit the “practical philosophy” of Swami Vivekanand to future generations of India. Swami Ji underlined the fact that GDP is not true indicators of the real growth of the country in light of the deep gap between rich and poor. Swami Sarvapriyananda, minister responsible for the Vedanta Society of New York, addressed the assembled youth as the keynote speaker on ‘Are the ideas of Swami Vivekananda relevant to the youth of India today’ today?” followed by a one-hour question-and-answer session. Swami Sarvapriyananda pointed out that the life of Swami Vivekananda inspires different generations of politicians, from Jawahar Lal Nehru to Narendra Modi. He further stated that in the Chicago Parliament of Religion, behind Swami Vivekananda, 5,000 years of Hindu tradition spoke. Swami Vivekananda enlightened the Western country, in this light India was able to discover itself. He said that India is not a dead country but a sleeping country. Swami Sarvapriyananda was interviewed on topics ranging from emotional well-being to God-realization. He quoted various verses from the Upanishads while answering questions from the audience. He put the spirituality in simple words of Swami Ranganathanda the 13th President of the Ramakrishna order because spirituality means when I close my eyes I find inner peace and when I open my eyes I feel what I can do for others. Responding to a question from a youth, Swami Sarvapriyananda said that spirituality helps a person resist harming others in fierce competition. While answering a difficult question from a young person who is dealing with a huge lack of family harmony in his life, he said first you focus on your life. Trust that God will take care of everyone and do everything in your power to help your parents. Don’t hurt yourself, until you can, you can’t help your parents. This is practical Vedanta.
