The Swachh Mangaluru Foundation and others in the city will today congratulate Ramakrisha Mutt, Mangaluru, on receiving the Amrutamahotsava Rajyotsava Award from the state government on November 1.

Ganesh Karnik, former MLC and member of the foundation, said: “This is the 75th year of independence and the pooch was among 10 organizations to receive the special Amrutamahotsava Rajyotsava award. It is a coincidence that it received the award when it was in the 75th year of its operation in the city since June 1947.”

In addition to organizing programs to profess the ideals of Swami Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Swami Vivekananda, the Mangaluru Mutt provided education to needy children. He answered the call of the Belur Ramakrisha Mutt and actively promoted the Swachh Bharath campaign in Mangaluru and other parts of Dakshina Kannada by organizing weekly Swachh Mangaluru cleanliness campaigns through the Ramakrishna Mission.

The Mission has inspired more than 2,000 households in Mangaluru to adopt pot composting for the treatment of wet kitchen waste in homes. He organized Swachh Manas and Swachh Soch youth programs and was instrumental in establishing the Swachh Mangaluru Foundation, which organizes cleanliness and development programs.

He also guided volunteers to set up the start-up, Mangala Resource Management Private Ltd., which dealt with domestic solid waste in Uppinangady for 20 months. The start-up has also been running a material recovery facility in Nitte in Karkala taluk to process dry waste of 43 grams of panchayats for six months. It also processes waste generated at Kateel Durgaparameshwari Temple and Kukke Subrahmanya Temple. It has submitted a detailed project report to Mangaluru City Corporation for the city’s solid waste management, Karnik said.

“Saturday’s congratulation is to thank the pooch for his work in developing the twin districts,” Karnik said. Kannada and Culture Minister V. Sunil Kumar, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MPs D.Vedavyas Kamath, Y. Bharath Shetty and UT Khader, Chancellor of Nitte Considered Vinay Hegde University will attend the ceremony, said he declared.
