GDP in the soup for misrepresentation of the facts on the revolt of 1857

Mentioning Swami Vivekananda and Ramana Maharishi as among those who influenced the First War of Independence of 1857 in “New India Samachar” earned ridicule at the Press Information Bureau with several including a historian, a politician and a party , asking how someone born after the event influences it.

One of the infographics in the latest issue of New India Samachar said: “The Bhakti movement heralded the struggle for freedom in India. During Bhakti Yuga, the saints and mahants of this country, from all parts of the country, be it Swami Vivekananda, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Ramana Maharishi, were worried about her spiritual awareness. She served as a precursor to the 1857 revolt,” the article states.

Following a social media storm, the GDP quietly changed the part under the title “story inspiration” omitting all names. The revised part said: “The Bhakti movement acted as the foundation of the freedom struggle. As the Bhakti movement gave strength to the freedom movement, so the inspiration for the Atma Nirbhar Bharat is derived from those great personalities associated with it.”

Earlier today, GDP tweeted the screenshot of the magazine cover and infographic with a comment: “There has been a lot of participation from the common man in the freedom movement. But a lot of “among them were forgotten. In an effort to change the spotlight on these anonymous freedom fighters, #AmritMahotsav celebrations have begun.”

Soon after, several people mention that Swami Vivekananda was born in 1863 and Ramana Maharshi in 1879 while the first war of independence took place in 1857.

Historian Srinath Raghavan tweeted: “ROLL OVER historians of India. GDP spoke…”

Senior Congress spokesman Pawan Khera tweeted: “Swami Vivekananda was born in 1863 (six years after 1857); Ramana Maharishi was born in 1879 (22 years after 1857). But the GDP says they were a precursor to the “revolt of 1857″. Slow applause for this degree in full history.”

Trinamool Congress tweeted: “Something fishy about Amrit in #AmritMahotsav. Swami Vivekananda Ji was born in 1863. We’re still trying to figure out how he influenced the ‘Revolt of 1857’, if that’s that’s what we’ll call it… @PIB_India, can you send help?”

Twitter user @IbrahimMaliyam asked if Swami Vivekananda and Ramana Maharshi had “time traveled” to create a spiritual consciousness that acted as a precursor to rebellion. “Well done,” he tweeted.

Another Twitter user @Digjoy15 said: “1) Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was born in 1486 and died in 1534. The first Britons arrived in India around 1608. 2) Swami Vivekananda was born in 1863, Ramana Maharshi was born in 1879 and the mutiny or revolt of the Sepoys occurred. in 1857. None of them from the era of the Bhakti movement.

One of the @AQalbee Twitter handlers asked if the GDP fact-checking unit could do their own fact-checking, please. “Alternatively, we can outsource this fact-checking to @zoo_bear @AltNews @free_thinker,” he added.
