New Delhi: Hindu religious institutions Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) and Ramakrishna Mission are among 6,000 NGOs whose Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) registration has not been renewed by the Union Home Office , according The Hindu.

The TTD manages the famous Venkateswara Temple in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. The Ramakrishna Trust and Mission are registered as Hindu religious organisations, while the FCRA’s registration of the Shri Saibaba Sansthan Trust (SSST) of Shirdi, which falls under the “religious (other)” category of the law, was also not renewed, the newspaper reported. .

However, it is not clear from The Hinduif the organizations have not applied for renewal of their registration or if the Ministry of the Interior has refused to renew it.

The ministry said last week that it had refused to renew the registration with the FCRA of 179 NGOs, while 5,789 NGOs had not applied for renewal by the December 31 deadline. The deadline has been extended to March 31, 2022, but only applications from NGOs that had requested a renewal by December 31 will be considered.

However, a senior government official said The Hindu that NGOs whose FCRA registration has not been renewed may reapply.

NGOs registered with the FCRA may receive foreign contributions for social, educational, religious, economic and cultural purposes. FCRA registration is mandatory for any association and NGO to receive foreign funding.

According The Hindu, the Department of the Interior did not explain why the FCRA registration of the three religious associations was not renewed. When the media said that the registration with the FCRA of the Missionaries of Charity, a congregation created by Nobel laureate Mother Teresa, had not been renewed, the Ministry of the Interior said that there had “some negative contributions” – and therefore the registration was not renewed.

The newspaper reported that the annual report filed by the TTD on December 22, 2021 showed that it had Rs 13.4 crore in its designated foreign contribution bank account, while the SSST report showed that it had more than 5 crores of rupees to the designated account.

According to the official FCRA-related website, among the organizations and entities whose registration under the FCRA has ceased or expired include IIT Delhi, Jamia Milia Islamia, Indian Medical Association, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, India Habitat Centre, Lady Shri Ram College for Women and Delhi College of Engineering.

The Indira Gandhi National Arts Centre, Indian Institute of Public Administration, Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial Foundation and Oxfam India were on the long list provided by the Union Home Ministry.

Other organizations whose registration with the FCRA ceased included Medical Council of India, Emmanuel Hospital Association, Tuberculosis Association Of India, Vishwa Dharamayatan, Maharishi Ayurveda Pratishthan, National Federation Of Fishermen’s Cooperatives Ltd.
