BUT, WHAT IS THE BHAKTI MOVEMENT?

A social movement, which probably started in Tamil Nadu, around the 6th and 7th centuries AD to empower those in the lower rungs of society.

It was in the 12th century that the movement was started by Basavanna in the Kannada region. During this period, they produced literature known as ‘Vachana sahitya’. He questioned the caste hierarchy, emphasized a person’s direct connection to God and the possibility of salvation through good deeds.

The movement started in Maharashtra in the 13th century and later in northern India.

It is therefore clear that, whether or not the movement played a role in the 1857 revolt, neither the actions of Swami Vivekananda nor Ramana Maharshi could have acted as a forerunner, as they both arose after the rebellion against British rule.
